Ayuveda the ancient medical system terms old age as “Vardhakya” which begins from the age of sixty, as it is in age, the process of degeneration begins, and the body succumbs to various pain, both in mind and body.
Holistic science suggests along with medications for combating the diseases, a will power to accept the unpleasant changes in the body also plays a major role in combating diseases/pains.
From an ayurvedic perspective, vata which is the principle factor for initiating body functions like locomotion, respiration, excretion, metabolism, digestion etc., gets aggravated during old age and hence the normal functions of the body gets disrupted. As a result there is a massive change in the psychological, physiological and pathological aspects in the body. These days most senior citizens are increasingly prone to various diseases like hypertension, diabetes which leads to chronic pain in their body.
Various factors contribute towards aggravating vata during old age, like physical stress and strain, irregular food habits, nutritional imbalances and so on. Along with this, there is the natural feeling of insecurity that creeps in during old age. The elderly people require love and affection from their kith and kin in order to remain psychologically fit.
Rasayana therapy along with the following points are to be considered by the elderly people to cope up with all the physical and psychological pains/discomforts.
DIET- A balanced diet like Green leafy vegetables, carrot, apple, gooseberry and orange are rich sources of antioxidants is very essential as it plays an important role in alleviating pain that are caused due to diet imbalance.

Mind - Seat of pain

Ayurveda, a traditional Indian Medicine system believes that the imbalance/pain originates in the mind in the form of some negative emotion which in turn the affects the body. It emphasis that the doshic (vata, pitta, kapha) imbalances usually rest upon an excess of Gunas (rajas or tamas), which in turn reflect deeper karmic disharmonies leading to pain.
Traditional Ayurveda recognizes below mentioned factors as the main causes of any sort of diseases/pain :
a) Doshic imbalances, either by constitution or by external factors :The doshas as they accumulate as toxins have negative emotional components like Vata as fear, Pitta as anger and Kapha as attachment. Pain of any type first imbalances Vata, so pain management of any type will involve a strong component of anti-Vata consideration.
b) Excess of rajas and tamas in the mind. The three gunas are mainly psychological factors with rajas as ego-driven impulses and tamas as deeper emotional blockages, insensitivity or addictions.
c) Karmic factors or results of previous actions.
Ayurveda thus has an integrated approach to treat any sort of pain by
** removing the doshas and increasing sattva guna but also eliminating the negative karmas which sustain them in our own behavior.
** calming the chitta (mental disturbances), developing the buddhi (discriminating intelligence), controlling the manas (outer mental activity) and reducing ahamkara(ego).
Ayurveda teaches us to harmonize the mind and to return to the Self behind the mind and its stream of thoughts. The power of mind can overcome any physical aberrations, along with the ayurvedic treatment, an organized life style, exercises, yoga and meditation, medical counseling and stress management effectively contributes towards early recovery from any sort of pain.

PAIN – Ayurvedic Concept :

According to Ayurveda, an ancient Indian Holistic medical system 'Health is happiness and disease is Pain' and it understands pain as a problem in vayu (air, one of the personality types according to ayurveda), which deals with the nervous system and any pain on the body is refered as Roga. Site of Pain (Vedana) are Mind (manas) and Body along with sense organs.
a) Causative factors of any pain are :** Asatmendriyarth samyoga -. It includes excessive utilization or wrong Utilization of objects of senses like vision, Sound, smell, taste and touch) Agni is responsible for proper appetite and digestion of food. Anything in excess (activity, diet, exercise etc) cause derangement in jatharagni (appetite). It is unable to digest the food. Hence undigested in the stomach and gets infected by doshas. This is Aama. This aama gets fermented producing toxins and thus acts as a poison for the body. ** Prajnaaparadha - Misdeeds performed by an individual as a result of wrong decision taken by the mind** Parinama (kala) - Any unfavourable changes in weather and time
b) Classification of Pain are :** Nija Agantuja - Caused solely due to derangement of physiological disturbances ** Sharirik Manasik - Physiological disturbance & Psychological imbalance
c) Pain caused solely due to derangement of three humors :** Vataj Vikara – Caused due to derangement of Vata dosha** Pittaj Vikara – caused due to derangement of Pitta dosha ** Kaphaj Vikara – Caused due to derangement of Kapha dosha
Contrary to all indications, there is a positive side to pain. It is the body's riot alarm. Without its warning signals, we would succumb to the mildest of maladies. Ayurveda imparts knowledge on individual constitution of our body and use of various herbs, minerals, proper diet, exercises, Panch Karma and Yoga therapy to treat pain and promote good health, treat pain and acquire longevity.
